#METGALAMONDAY: THE CO-HOSTS

This Monday was the first Monday in May and that only means one thing…The Met Gala or the Met Ball - whatever you wanna call it, its one of fashion’s biggest nights. This Met Gala is not like the rest, ‘Notes on Camp’s’ Met starts off with not the usual red carpet but a bright pink carpet . In the essay, 'Notes on "Camp,"' Susan Sontag says 'the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.'  Something so bad that it’s good and it was definitely good…

Anna Wintour, Editor-In-Chief of Vogue (holder of my dream job) who has chaired the Met Gala since 1995 arrived first to the fabulously camp pink carpet wearing a beautiful pale pink, flower embellished Chanel gown with a full on pink and black feather shawl.

The look was spectacular and pretty bold for the usually fairly reserved Anna. However, she really brought her A game to the carpet following the theme beautifully whilst still maintaining her personal style.

Anna also didn’t wear her trademark dark sunnies for the carpet and instead opted to show off her make-up - a rarity.

Harry Styles, to absolutely nobody’s surprise, wore Gucci. I think that a lot of people were a bit disappointed with Harry’s outfit, there was a big expectation that he’d wear one of his usual flamboyant floral Gucci suits. Instead, he wore black head to toe and somehow, in true Harry fashion, managed to avoid comparisons to Zorro.

Harry’s stylist, Harry Lambert said about the outfit, “I think everyone was expecting Harry to be in sequins, bright colours and a crown, but we decided on a different type of 'camp' that hopefully would surprise,”

Then of course we have the single pearl earring and what design house is it from? Gucci of course - who else. The single pearl earring really elevated Harry’s outfit and gave it the finishing touch, je ne sais quoi if you will. And, Harry…a single earring in your right ear? Is this our baby finally telling us a little something something? If you aren’t quite sure what track i’m on…I’ll guide your mind a little (click me you little rebel). So, there’s that - Harry never does anything without a team of publicists and media superstars thinking it through before hand so we can only assume that he knew exactly what he was saying. Stylist Harry Lambert said that he found the earring last minute and thought it would complete the look perfectly; and a little birdie told me (okay, it was a woman who spoke to him at the Met Gala 🤥) that he pierced the ear himself - utmost control.

Over the years, we have seen our boy go from boyband superstar dressed in awful (but in a cute way) purple sneakers to a Chelsea boot clad fashionista. His solo world tour was a real stepping stone in terms of his fashion and I really love the direction Harry Lambert is taking Harry Styles’ style in (that was complicated - 50 points if you managed that). I got so caught up in the earring thing that I forgot to mention that Harry also wore high heeled boots with his ‘free the nipple’ heavy ensemble - style star.

Lady Gaga does the most with not just one but four outfits in one. She started the evening off in a bright fuchsia parachute dress with full male dancing ensemble fitted with black tuxes and umbrellas. Then stylist, Brandon Maxwell unbuttoned and removed the dramatic dress to reveal a beautiful old Hollywood style black dress before further stripping her down to a slinky fuchsia number until finally, she went full on Paparazzi/ Fame Monster era stripping down to glitzy fishnets, bra and pants which she rocked with some of her trademark sky high boots.

The multi faceted outfit was interesting as it really drew the line between the old, OTT gaga who wore sky high stilettos and a meat dress and the ‘new’ Gaga who is all about silver screen glamour. The whole ‘strip that down’ thing did it for me up until a certain point. It kind of lost me at the glitzy underwear outfit but I can appreciate where they were going.

Many of my friends weren’t too complimentary about Serena Williams’ outfit at the Met Gala saying things which were mostly close to “she looks like big bird”. I for one disagree, I actually loved the outfit (armchair critic and all that).

She wore a very vivid yellow and pink Versace dress which I felt not only suited her skin tone really well but the ‘blossoms’ (i’m being liberal here) match the carpet (lol 😂- I hope you got that otherwise i’m an idiot laughing by myself). The dress and shoes are also very much in line with the current '‘in-colour’ Gen Z yellow. The main thing for me though was that she looked very comfortable and very much herself. Yes, the dress is over the top - it’s the definition of ‘camp’ thank you very much.

I have no clue who the stylist behind this outfit was, I could probably find out but ultimately that sounds like a lot of effort and I was never ready - sorry. However, whoever it was who put it together, it’s a great look. The other thing I really loved was that Serena wore trainers to the Met Gala so she was undoubtedly the most comfortable guest there (female in any case) and it was a lovely ode to her previous work with Virgil Abloh of Off White. If I seem to have gone off my rocker and you have no idea what i’m talking about, Serena did a collaboration with Off White called the ‘Queen Collection’ which was designed by Virgil. In any case, now you have that (possibly useless) information, the sneakers she wears here are ‘Volt’ Nike X Off White Air Force 1’s.

Alessandro-Michele-2019-Met-Gala.jpg

The final co-host of this year’s Met Gala was Mr Gucci himself, Alessandro Michele. Alessandro, if you’ve never heard of him, is the creative director of Gucci. He’s the guy behind Gucci’s over the top, maximalist aesthetic which I am so very in love with. He has, according to CNBC, grown Gucci's brand value the most of any luxury fashion label with the brand’s revenue up 30 percent.

In what was possibly even less of a surprise than Harry Styles wearing Gucci, Alessandro also opted for a Gucci look (shock). In any case, he looked perfectly camp in a bright pink Gucci…suit thing? The blouse is heavily ruffled and very vibrant and Alessandro, like Harry, opted for heels, heavily ringed fingers (Gucci) and an over the top head piece.

Fabulous baby

MISSGUIDED X BARBIE

I love a great brand collaboration and this collab between Missguided and Barbie is the ultimate in brand collaboration. I've taken a look at the collection online and chosen some of my absolute favourite pieces.

Barbie bikini's? It's a definite 'yes' from me! The candy stripes are amazing and I think this looks like a really fabulously flattering set!

The words 'Barbie' across your boobs? I mean, what more could you possibly ask for? Also, £20.00 for a bikini set? That is freaking amazing!

In all of the beauty of this collection, remember that you don't have to have a 'Barbie' figure in order to wear any part of this collection. You don't need a thigh gap and you don't have to be 6 feet tall.

Be you because you are the ultimate girl, just like 'Barbie'

DITCH THE LABEL AND RIVER ISLAND

River Island have teamed up with 'Ditch the label' for an anti-bullying campaign which is my favourite thing to happen so far in 2018. As a victim of bullying myself, I realise how much of an impact words and actions can have and how important it is to treat everyone with respect.

I have so much love for this campaign and the second I saw it, I got involved. I chose to purchase the multi coloured 'Labels are for clothes' jumper. I have never been more excited to spend 26 pounds. River Island are doing their part by donating 3 pounds from every sale plus an extra pound for every social share using  #Labelsareforclothes

If you can't afford to pay the money for one of their special edition campaign shirts, worry not because you can still help by sharing all of these posts on your social media!

KATE MOSS NEW OXFORD STREET STORE ANYTHING BUT RESERVED

DSCN1637 2.JPG

Kate Moss (yes that Kate Moss) has teamed up with the massive Polish high-street brand Reserved to bring the new Autumn/Winter ’17 to London. The entire collection has Kate's stamp of approval and the collection will be refreshed every two weeks to keep the shop new, fresh and interesting. Essentially, this means that if you like something, you better get it while you still can.

The pricing is also great. The collection isn't expensive and rivals other high-street brands like Zara in terms of pricing. The store itself is absolutely huge and essentially 'divided' into four with Women's, Men's, Accessories and Kids departments. Fashion-wise, the store has absolutely amazing content and has some seriously amazing Autumn/Winter pieces at amazing prices. I really didn't see much over the 30-pound mark in the store, excluding only boots and jackets which really is fair enough.

The campaign – fifteen black-and-white images which were shot this summer by Daniel Jackson

The store itself really reflects Moss' rock and roll chic aesthetic with black and white being the main colours and plenty of mirrored surfaces throughout.  It is filled with opposites like leather and soft jerseys, the meshing of hard and soft which forms that iconic 'London look' that Kate Moss is famed for. Co-founder and CEO Marek Piechocki spoke about the launch, saying: “The opening of Reserved Oxford Street is an important move for us. London is a fashion capital and having a presence in this prestigious location will be another step towards building global recognition of Reserved as a brand and LPP as a company.”

In terms of the campaign, Daniel Jackson shot fifteen black-and-white images of Moss which are on constant electronic display throughout the store.

Also worth mentioning is the men's collection (even though I don't usually cover it). It's very cool and almost excessively 'London' with bright colours and black simultaneously challenging and complimenting each other.

The shop is definitely worth a visit if you're heading to London soon and definitely worth while taking anyone who is visiting from overseas to see it.

KARL LAGERFELD X VANS

karl-lagerfeld-vans-collab-02.jpg

So, I posted about this a few days ago when it was first announced. I was a little excited. In saying that, of course I mean that I was so excited that I pretty much started saving on the spot. This is insane! I love Karl Lagerfeld and I love Vans so honestly, what could be more perfect?

So, news today is that the first images are here, take a little look! Karl has re-worked the classic Vans check, replacing it with interlocked Karl Lagerfeld silhouettes. T-shirts also possess a pixelated version of his famous silhouette whilst other items will have the Vans X Karl Lagerfeld logo.

There’s apparently going to be more in terms of clothing and accessories including a hoodie and a K-stitched, quilted backpack. The collection will also boast six styles of footwear which is also hugely exciting!

Possibly the best thing though is that the collection will be within the realm of possibility for most ordinary citizens with prices starting at only $40 (and then going all the way up to $300).

The collection will be available in Karl Lagerfeld stores, on Karl.com, and on Vans’s site on September 7th.

LAYER ME UP

Screenshot 2017-08-22 16.10.06.png

There is only one way to manage the ever changing english weather and that is layering (and being prepared for rain at any and all times). England is all well and good during winter when the weather remains fairly stable throughout the day, only changing really a few degrees day to night. Then, you pretty much know what you're doing and dressing for the day is (in general) not a problem.

Here's a problem I have found though. Whilst throughout the day the temperature may remain fairly stable, first thing in the morning is cold and the evenings, with us drawing ever nearer to Autumn, are also much cooler. So, thats a basic outline of weather (which I'm sure you were all really enjoying reading). Another issue comes around when you're commuting, if you use the morning train, its air conditioned and thus you will end up cold. If you use tubes (undergrounds), you  will soon realise that they're really hot. Its great when you're coming from your morning train and are more or less frozen solid but about 5 minutes in, it quickly becomes an issue.

So, here's where I come in. My suggestions are as follows:

If the weather says that there will be no rain: DO NOT BELIEVE IT

England is famous for rain and it almost certainly will and always when you least expect it. I recommend keeping an umbrella with you at all times and one in absolutely every single place you can think of. This means making sure that there is always one in the handbag you're using, one at your desk, one in your car (if you have one) etc...

If the weather is around 20 degrees and partly cloudy:

Think light layers. If you're wearing jeans or pants, you want those with a pair of shoes of your choosing, basically whatever works and doesn't totally kill you when you're busy walking the streets of London. Then add a T-shirt and on top of that a jersey. Easy to take on and off in the case of cold trains or hot tubes also light enough to pop in a bag should you need to do so. If you want to wear a dress or skirt, the basic principle is the same, light dress or skirt and t-shirt (can be sleeveless) and then a jersey on top of that (can be in the form of a pull-on jumper or a cardigan). Easy peasy.

If the day seems a bit colder, you can add a light blazer or jacket on top of that. As it gets colder, a coat with no lining should do for Autumn progressing to a trench coat for colder Autumn days and winter. The t-shirt can change from short sleeved to long sleeved depending on the weather.

And that is the easiest way to layer.

Also, a quick note: If you have a favourite pair of pants but they're too light for Autumn/Winter or even a colder day, get some leggings and layer up that way. You can also still show off ankle and shoes and the bonus with leggings is that you get no stocking hugging from your pants!

AUTUMN LOOK BOOK 2017: PART 1

Autumn is probably one of the most confusing seasons just in general but especially when it comes to dressing appropriately. We all know that when Winter rolls around, it comes time to rummage around in the nether regions of our closets and find long lost tights and boots. I think that I have Winter down, I also have Summer down and even Spring isn't too much of a problem. Autumn though...I mean what do you wear? Are jeans the only real option here or are tights okay? Should I wear a skirt with tights and boots or with boots but no tights? I find this season all too confusing for my liking and I'm always at a loss of what to wear. I would say that when I do search outfits on Pinterest or We Heart It, 99% of the time it's a hunt for Autumnal inspiration. Having said this, I have tried to get my ducks into at least the same pond this year and make a little Autumn look book. So, without further ado, here's part 1.

LOOK 1: WARMING UP TO AUTUMN

a200ee_7fce90f0e15a4d60916e511085db0ecf~mv2_d_1360_1360_s_2.jpeg

This is definitely a 'warmer day' look. Perfect for a day that's somewhere between Summer and Winter.

I have taken the staple of black jeans and paired then with a larger fit shirt (in this case from Mr Price) and some cool sandals. I really like this shirt because of the bit of ruffle detail on the back for visual interest (which you cannot see in this image...sorry) and the larger fit works really well to balance skinny jeans. I always feel like my hips are my largest part and so a flared or bigger fit shirt which lands on the hip really helps.

I would say that the only real way to wear this shirt with flared jeans would be to tuck it in (ditto for a skirt). Absolutely one of my favs for warmer Autumn days. I'll show you this shirt with a skirt in the next instalment of the 'Autumn Look Book'.

LOOK 2: DOUBLE DENIM

a200ee_1d9efe983ea24b6698c699865820784d~mv2_d_1222_1222_s_2.jpg

Once again, jeans make this look work. This time, the jeans are from Topshop (the Cain style if you were interested) and are a lovely high waisted fit.

High waisted jeans are always a great option in my opinion. I'm not a huge lover of jeans (or pants in general) because I feel like they always make my legs look short and fat. Having a high waist really lengthens your legs and makes you look taller.

You really can wear double denim as long as the denims in question are different enough. In this instance, one denim is much lighter than the other. I love playing around with trends like this one (which quite clearly came back from the 90's)

Personally, I like a nice flat shoe with this look. You can really go for any shoe and you can even bring a pop of colour in with the shoe. I chose a pair from Rubi by Cotton On which are slip on and have a nice black and white print for a bit of interest.

LOOK 3: LARGER FIT DENIM JACKET

a200ee_f72ce199899b490c84221957ac61f012~mv2.jpg

It isn't a big secret that denim goes with everything, even with denim [just make sure the denims are different enough in colour so you don't end up looking like the 90's threw up on you because that's not a good look on anyone. Here's looking at you Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake]. This particuar denim jacket is from Mr Price and is so comfy.

It's very much 80's or 90's in style with is large fit sleeves and bulky look. I particularly like using all the pins (the 90's had them) to decorate the jacket and make it your own. You might have some from all over the world, some from your childhood (especially if you're a 90's kid) and maybe even some from Disney.

However, if you find yourself sans pins to put on your jacket, worry not as places like Cotton On, Topshop and Typo are selling them. I love the customisation of clothes which has made a big return in 2016/17. Patches, badges...anything you want, go mad. This jacket already has a really cool back which is quite novel and very much a 'joburg' print. If you have a plain denim jacket and want it to look more 'you' just customise it either by sending it off to be printed on or by decorating it yourself if you're feeling artsy.

AN OUTFIT FOR TRAVEL, FASHION AND COMFORT....

a200ee_54434823fa07416d92fbfb3430703d11~mv2_d_1836_1836_s_2.jpg

Recently, I took my yearly trip with my parents to Umhlanga. I always loved Umhlanga but recently, my love for the place has grown exponentially as it has become more built up and buzzy (i'm a city girl).

This outfit was what I wore the day we road-tripped back from Umhlanga to Johannesburg which is a 6 hour trip. It's a long time to be sitting in the car and thus you have to choose your clothes carefully.

The first and most major thing to consider is the weather. In order to be comfortable both in and out of the car you need to make sure you know what the weather is all along the way at stops as well as at the final destination. It was a hot day reaching 30 odd degrees Celsius in both Umhlanga and Durban. However, the midway point where we stop for lunch (Harrismith) was only around 20 degrees. That's a big temperature difference.

You also want to be comfortable enough to sit in the car, maybe lie down and sleep if you're that way inclined on long journeys. While you do that, you don't want to end up with extremely creased clothes when you exit the car. For me, style is very important and I always want to look good even when travelling.

I specifically didn't want to wear jeans for this trip because of the temperature and i wasn't sure about how a dress would wear after a few hours of sitting in the car. So I decided against the wearing of a dress.

Instead, this was the outfit that I chose. It is a bit of a step out of the box for me as (for unknown reasons) I have never worn these pants with anything other than a white t-shirt. I actually love the tee that I chose here so much though. It's from Mr Price and one of those really soft and easy-to-wear materials that just scream comfort as soon as you put them on your body. It is a pale pink and says 'Hollywood' across the front. The pants from Zara are absolutely one of the most comfortable and easy wearing thing you can put on your body. They slip on and off really easily (which is amazing for long car trips) and they're flowy enough to be comfortable and look super easy-going. They still have that pop and make a bit of a statement though. Essentially the 'pants' are actually long length culottes. The piece that I have tied on the side as a 'belt' is acyually the front bit of fabric that creates the 'skirt'. I tied it with a hair band and it works. I actually like these more worn as pants than as culottes.

My sunnies are my prescription Ray-Bans and the shoes are a nice, comfortable and practical heel from River Island. The bag is vintage Louis Vuitton and I am in love with it.

So yeah, that's my outfit. I will try to find similar pieces and link them for you below.

ZOELLA'S PINK CHUNKY FISHERMAN KNIT JUMPER

a200ee_8c048863d01143afa9b57c48f14c013f~mv2.jpeg

BDG Pink Waffle Knit Batwing Jumper £42

So, you just watched Zoella's new video and you're left wondering...where the hell is that jumper from? Well many people asked on Zoe's video and so I decided to find it. Now, I had a vague idea where to start, given that Zoe and Mark had just been to bath and both purchased things from Urban Outfitters and we have never seen the jumper before, it gave me a hint.

I did also look on Asos, Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Primark and well...everywhere else. I actually found it and heavens am I proud of myself.

The lighting that Zoe used in her video may have sightly 'changed' the look of the colour of the jumper. I am pretty convinced that this is in fact the jumper itself.

So all that's left is...Zoe??? Is this your jumper?

ZOELLA'S 'FRIED EGG' CROSS BODY BAG? WE KNOW WHERE YOU CAN FIND IT...

a200ee_9cbbafd11bbf4e7e9aa3e9aad045140b~mv2.png

It's no secret that I am a lover of Zoe Sugg (minds out of the gutters).

Lately, we have seen Zoe or 'Zoella' rocking a specific bag, namely the black bag with the fried egg clasp. So, since Zoe has yet to mention where this bag is from and so many people are curious, I decided to make it my personal mission to find out.

It certainly wasn't as easy as you might think as the search 'Zoella Fried Egg Handbag' on Google yielded no results. But I found a picture of a very similar looking bag which led me to finding the real one (below). It might be a bag for your wishlist though because it certainly doesn't come cheap.

a200ee_c5cc1bea235c414691213be4764142d5~mv2.png

The bag in question is this one from Anya Hindmarch and its worth a pretty penny too, boasting a price tag of £1,195.00. It's called the Egg Bathurst Cross-Body and is apparently 'SILK CALF LEATHER IN BLACK'. So, here it is in all its Anya Hindmarch glory below.
